Nourishing Bodies, Renewing Hope

As we enter our Spring Fundraiser, we invite you to reflect with us on a pressing and heartbreaking reality. Right now, more than 5.7 million people in Haiti—over half the population—are facing food insecurity. Even more devastating, 1.9 million are experiencing emergency levels of hunger, where daily survival is uncertain.

Through the grace of God and your faithful support, Branch Lutheran Schools of Haiti is able to provide:
Three daily meals for children living in our three orphanages
A daily light meal for students, which is often the only food they will receive that day

Food is not just nourishment, it is the foundation for learning, growth, and a future filled with possibility. Without it, even the brightest dreams begin to fade. That is why this spring, we are focusing on food. Because no child should have to learn on an empty stomach.

We know these realities are difficult to read about, and even harder to fully understand. But as followers of Christ, we are called to respond with compassion and action—to care for our neighbors in their time of need.

A Note From Pastor Rona in Haiti

"Everyone in the villages where we have schools knows that they are the best schools academically in the entire region. Parents are coming from further and further distances to bring their children to our schools. When the parents see a new classroom being constructed, they get very excited and express their gratitude. They know that means more grades are being added to our school! More than anything, our schools are renowned for how much the teachers love their students, more than any other schools!”

For children in Haiti, the situation is bleak. Their homeland is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere and has the lowest literacy rate, ranging from 61-68%. School fees are difficult to afford for many parents, as 75% of the population lives on $2.69 or less every day, yet education is a light and hope for the next generation and is desperately needed.

Branch Schools is a WELS affiliated, Lutheran non-profit organization that sends funding to six schools in Haiti; three elementary schools, hosted at three orphanages in the Port-au-Prince area, one middle school in Pilate, one preschool-kindergarten in Les Palmes, and one preschool-kindergarten in Cap-Haitien. These schools serve over 1,700 students and employ over 65 teachers.

A common saying in Haiti is that the country is "70% Catholic, 30% Protestant, and 100% Vodou." At Branch Schools, the children hear the Word of God in their classrooms every day and learn of the amazing love and salvation found in Jesus. They memorize the 10 Commandments, Apostles Creed, Lord's Prayer, and more as they dive into a thorough study of the Bible's teachings.
